[AIRPORT] Billy Bishop Island Airport Up for Sale

It is fairly well know that the Billy Bishop Airport (YTZ) is owned by Porter Airlines. In a bizarre twist, the terminal is up for sale. Apparently, the Porter Airlines wants a deal that you allow them to lease back the terminal so that the airline can expand and focus on its core business.

Even though the sale would have a conditional lease agreement that would probably be arranged so that Porter does not get kicked out of its own airport that easily, this I find is still a risky move on Porter’s part. Porter owning the airport has so many advantages. By selling the property to someone else, they will lose a lot of control.

On the other hand, the airport definitely does need some expansion and maybe having a new landlord in place change help speed up the expansion projects, such as the 400-metre runway extension that they have been hoping from.

There has always been a difference of opinion regarding this airport. Passengers probably enjoy the convenience of the airport, so that they can avoid Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). But those who do not use the airport will probably be more annoyed at further expansion.

I am very interested in seeing what is going to happen with this airport. I will be folowing this story closely. Imagine if Air Canada bought the land…
