[ANALYSIS] MBNA Sony Card Platinum Plus MasterCard

The sign up bonus on the MBNA Sony Card Platinum Plus MasterCard moved from 2,000 to 10,000 Sony points. There does not seem to be a time frame on how long the promotion is going on for, so it may be a permanent increase. Below are the highlights of the credit card:

  • No annual fee
  • Earn 10,000 points after your first purchase
  • Earn 2 points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases of Sony products (at sony.ca or the Sony store)
  • Earn 1 point for every $1 spent on all other purchases

The no annual fee makes this credit card a no brainer for any fans of Sony.

The game changer is that all the Sony stores in Canada are being closed down. That means that you can only really earn the bonus Sony points on Sony.ca purchases. This is a great card to obtain the sign up bonus, but not so much afterwards.

Furthermore, every Sony point is worth 1 cent, which means when you earn 1 point per $1 spent, you are essentially only getting a 1% return.

With all the Sony stores being closed down in Canada, I am starting to suspect that this credit card may even simply be discontinued at some point. So if you are debating whether this credit card makes sense to have, you mine as well go for it now while you still can.
