Tips for Road Trips with Kids and Toddlers

At the beginning of the year, we wrote a post about Top Reasons to go on Road Trips – Pandemic Edition. A lot has changed since then, with much of the world and Canada opening up to tourists.

After completing a recent road trip deep into the province of Quebec, I thought I’d provide my personal tips when going on a road trip with toddlers and/or young kids.

It has been over 2 years since I last updated this post, so I thought it was way past due. Especially with summer rolling around and hopefully some loosening up of travel restrictions. For Canadians, it looks like we will need to stay within our borders this summer, which can be a good opportunity for some. It gives people a chance to explore more of our country!

Top Reasons to go on Road Trips (updated April 3, 2020)

I can’t be the only one who thinks that when this COVID-19 crisis is over that road trips are going to be more popular right? I predict that people will eventually get back to flying, but may be slow to do so. In the meantime, I think that road trips do satisfy some of the travel bug. Furthermore, it has been over 4 years since I last wrote my thoughts about road trips. So I think that it is due for an update.

I usually try to update this post once a year, as we get into spring. Historically, I have updated this post in June, but it may be more useful to update it sooner. The Canadian credit card landscape has changed quite a bit over the past year, so this post was definitely due for an update.

For Canadians, road trips generally consist of cross country or cross boarder to the United States. Perhaps some people venture further into Mexico, but probably not much further south. So this post will focus on two portfolios to put together, for travel within Canada and for travel to the United States / Mexico.

Top Credit Cards to Use on Road Trips

With the summer months coming up, lots of people intend on going on road trips, so of course, having a solid credit card portfolio with you can help you maximize the rewards on all the expenses that come with a road trip.

On a road trip, the biggest expenses that you will have are: restaurants, gas, grocery and maybe hotel expenses. Therefore, I would build the following credit card portfolio for this summer’s road trips, based on all the current offers available. I also indicated the only the relevant category to use that particular credit card for:
