[DISCONTINUED] Last Batch of Capital One IHG Reward Points

UPDATE- Nov. 24, 2016 Just received a response from Capital One: “Thanks for bringing this matter to our attention. Rest assured, all reward points earned up until November 7th will be credited to customers’ IHG Rewards Club accounts. We are working to complete the final points transfer within the next two weeks. For any additional questions or concerns regarding customer accounts or the transfer of reward points, please call our Customer Service team at 1-800-481-3239. Thank you.”

In the summer of 2015, the Capital One co-branded IHG Rewards credit cards discontinued. However, existing credit cardholders were grandfathered. But a year later, grandfathered cardholders received a letter stating that their credit cards will cease on November 7, 2016, which has come and gone.

My post generated a lot of discussion on people’s experience with Capital One. More recently, there seems to be an issue with points in the last statement. Seems like many people, including myself, tried our best to load up more spending with Capital One on the last two months before shutting down the credit card for good.

What is Happening

The October statement, for the most part, seems to have gone through without a hitch for most people. But the November statement is going to be a different story. As Capital One wraps up all the lose ends, they have delayed transferring the points over to IHG. Or the points appears to have been left in limbo somewhere.

Note that if you did not re-qualify to maintain your elite status in 2016 for 2017, then expect your current elite status to expire on December 31, 2016. So I understand that lots of people have put as much spending as possible to help re-qualify for elite status, so the missing points are crucial to many.

Reaching Out of Capital One

I have reached out to my Capital One contacts, but they decided to remain silent on the matter. Guess they aren’t a contact anymore? Either way, I am disappointed by the non-response.

UPDATE- Capital One reached out to me and confirmed that they will look into the matter and provide a response that I can share with everyone!

Personal Experience

My experience with Capital One is that some of my points were apparently already transferred to IHG on November 2, 2016. It is over 2 weeks and the points still haven’t shown up yet. I have been told that there is a glitch in the system and that it will be resolved at some point. As a result, there isn’t much I can say, other than wait patiently. I plan to follow up in a week or so.

However, it seems like some people may be getting a different response from Capital One than I did. My suggestion is to keep following up until you see your points. But don’t wait to follow up, the longer we wait, the more difficult it will be to recover our missing points. At some point, Capital One will completely wash their hands of this matter.

Conclusion

It is so unfortunately that this partnership had to end this way. It is also too bad that we had to see another co-branded hotel credit card disappear from the market.

I really hope that Capital One gets their act together and credits everyone the points that they are due. Feel free to continue to share your experiences in the comment section of this new thread.

  1. Hi
So I called capital one last night and spoke to someone in Canada and they said I had some points coming also from November 2 and the rest in December but then was sent and email through thier secure system that I was not OMG
Really so I am going to call back again and also send them a message it is really annoying

  2. Good morning, I also called Cap One but, contrary to your reply, they said I had to submit my request with IGH Rewards. So I called IHG Rewards at United States and Canada Telephone: 1-888-211-9874 (toll-free) and at the reps suggestion I also emailed them at ihgrewardsclub@ihg.com with my particular details including my last two statements so they could compare (one with points awarded on the statement and one without) and know what I was missing. I’ll let you know once I hear back.

    1. As soon as I hear something like that from a credit card Rep, I usually correct them, and explain to them that it is actually their responsibility to send the points to Capital One and that they should check with their supervisor to confirm they are saying to me. So unless the Capital One Rep told you that your points were already sent to IHG. I would ask them which date specifically, and exactly how much points were sent. Once you get the specifics, then it may be appropriate to ask IHG if they actually received it based on Capital One’s specifics.

The response that we got most recently from a Capital One CS Rep is that the points will be credited to our account on December 15, 2016.

Let us know how it goes!

      1. December 15 is the response I got from a Capital One CS rep as well. It is frustrating having to wait but I hope the points will be there by that date.
I think that there are many of us who are not happy that Capital One is getting rid of this card (thus the high number of posts). Still crossing my fingers that IHG will find a new partner for a MasterCard.
Thanks for keeping us in the loop!

  3. Hi
So it seems that November points are lost and no one was told that we would not get the points either from IHG or Capitalone Canada which is very sneaky of them I am getting my September October points November 2 ish not seen yet and my 10000 elite points are gone and according to capital one did not exist even though they were on my account till some time in November and recourse for this as it was my October November bill they are not hounoring

    1. How far did you push it? Keep escalating it. Right now though they said points will be issued on December 15 based on several responses. As for the elite status, that probably is taken off once the credit card is discontinued. Best case scenario was that it would last till Dec 31.

  4. Hi
I only need 6799 points for elite status for next year and more then have this with my October November capital one IHG points do you think they will not honour the elite status points?

    1. If IHG has been crediting your credit cad spending toward qualifying for elite status all this time, then they should continue to do so with your last batch of missing points. You can probably fight them on that as well. The only issue I see is that I hope that they credit you before the year end, so that it will count towards your 2016 qualification in time for 2017. If the points are credited in 2017, then it will count for 2017 qualification period instead.

  5. Even though you suggested to call Cap One and not IHG over this matter, as you know I had already emailed IHG. And here is what I got back.At least it’s the same message you got from IHG. I’ve included the contact info that was on the email in case anyone needs it down the road. Let’s hope we all get our points as promised.

Here is what I received”Thank you for contacting IHG Rewards Club regarding your Spire Elite account. We apologize for the delay in response as we are experiencing a high email volume. We appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

We would like to confirm that IHG Rewards Club ended the partnership with Capital One. Please be advise that transaction made on the Capital One credit card until 07 Nov 2016 only can still earn credits and will take 6-8 weeks to post on the account.
We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you as we value your patronage. Should you require further assistance, please feel free to contact the IHG Rewards Club Service Center again.

    1. The reason I say focus on Capital One is because if Capital One never notifies IHG that points are owed to you, there’s nothing IHG can do because they cannot go digging into your credit card information. If Capital One has already sent IHG the points, and you received confirmation of that, but IHG is still holding up crediting you the points, then it will be IHG’s problem.

As long as you stay on top of the sequence of how it flows, then you will know which buttons to push!

Either way, thanks for sharing the note from IHG, glad they are giving out a consistent message.

  6. I can not get a straight answer from capital one they will not admit the points owed for November it is very annoying and that keep saying that they only see Octobers points and November no response can you contact capital one again I have called and emailed many times

      1. Hey Syd, I have been given assurances again that your points will be credited in due time. A few of us are getting December 15 as the date where we will get our points. I suspect it may apply system wide. I was only planning on following up after that date myself. That is what I recommend.

    1. Just to follow up. The only message I’m really getting is that they are working on the issue system wide. Personally I plan to push them again after December 15 if the points don’t show up by then. Because that’s the date that they gave me so I’m going to hold them to it.

  7. FYI, I got all points owed to me from my last statement today. Now the only thing left is for IHG to form a new credit card partnership. In the meantime off to SPG Amex I go.

  8. FYI – There’s point posted to IHG account 2 days ago but wasn’t the full-credit (still missing 40%); Called Capital One doesn’t seem they’re able to look up, instead IHG Reward Club was telling me that there will be “another batch” of credits/ points will be posted upcoming Monday.
