[ANALYSIS] TD Platinum Travel Visa Card

Today, I am going to analyse the TD Platinum Travel Visa Card. It is a travel credit card issued by TD Canada Trust that earns TD points, which can be used for travel expenses. Below are the highlights of the credit card:

  • $99 annual fee
  • $50 for supplementary cardholders
  • Earn 15,000 bonus points upon approval
  • Earn 6 points for every $1 spent on Expedia online
  • Earn 4 points for every $1 spent over the phone with Expedia
  • Earn 3 points for every $1 spent on all other purchases

TD Points do not expire as long as you are a cardholder. Each point is worth 0.5 cents. Therefore, a 15,000 sign up bonus is equivalent to only $75. Therefore, the sign up bonus is not even enough to cover the annual fee.

There are different rewards that you can choose from. There is a 10,000-point minimum redemption required and in increments of 10,000 points on travel purchases.

I am not a big fan of this credit card,  but if you actively use Expedia to book a lot of trips, you are getting essentially a 3% return (6 points = $0.03). You may also want to look at the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, which gives you 4.5% return on Expedia purchases, but it comes with a $120 annual fee.

As always, do the math to determine which one makes more sense for you.
