Comparison of the Fido and Rogers MasterCards

Due to popular demand, I think that it is appropriate for me to write a comparison between the Rogers Bank Fido MasterCard and Rogers Platinum MasterCard.

Here is a quick look at the highlights of each respective cards:

Fido MasterCard

  • No annual fee
  • Earn $50 cash back sign up bonus (earn $25 after your first purchase and earn $25 when you register your Fido bill for pre-authorized payments both within the first 3 months)
  • Earn 4% cash back on foreign exchange purchases
  • Earn 1.5% cash back on all purchases

Rogers Platinum MasterCard

  • $29 annual fee (waived the first year or waived so long as you have pre-authorized Rogers payments set up)
  • Earn $25 cash back sign up bonus
  • Earn 4% cash back on foreign exchange purchases
  • Earn 1.75% cash back on all purchases

Note that the cash back can only be redeem for specific rewards.

Annual Fee

Right off the bat, you know the Fido card is going to come out ahead as they do not have any annual fees to begin with.

Winner: Fido

Sign Up Bonus

There are way to get $100 sign up bonus with the Rogers card if you get the card in-store and during special occasions. It is generally not advertised publically, so it may take a few visits. I recommend going on Boxing Day, as it has proven to work then. Otherwise, it can be a hit and miss.

For this reason, Fido comes out ahead, because they offer a high sign up bonus. Furthermore, the Rogers card used to offer $35 sign up bonus, so it already got hit with a devaluation.

Winner: Fido

Earning Ratios

The Rogers card comes out ahead, rightfully so since they have an annual fee associated with the card.

Winner: Rogers

Reward Redemption

Note that both cards have the same reward redemption options, which includes:

  • Rogers, Fido and chatr monthly bills
  • Purchases in Rogers and Fido branded stores
  • Purchases at The Shopping Channel
  • Subscriptions to Texture
  • Toronto Blue Jays tickets, merchandise at Jays Shop online or in store,
  • Rogers Centre concession purchases

Because the Rogers card has a higher earning ratio, you may end up using that card more often, which I why I will give them the edge.

Winner: Rogers

Conclusion

The true winner highly depends on your situation. I will provide a few examples. If you are not a Rogers, Fido or Chatr customer and only plan to use this card on foreign purchases, then it will make more sense to get the Fido card. If you are a customer of one of their 3 affiliate companies and you do plan to use the card on Canadian purchases, you mine as well go for the Rogers card and get the fee waived by putting your monthly bill on the credit card.

As you can see, it highly depends on everyone’s personal situation to determine which card makes more sense for them.

Since the Fido MasterCard is less restrictive (i.e. not needing to be a client of Rogers, Fido or Chatr), they get the overall edge!

  1. Hi Matthew. Is it possible to compare American Express® AIR MILES®* Reserve Credit Card and the BMO AIR MILES®† World Elite®* Mastercard®* . With Aeroplan’s uncertainty in regards with what will happen with the miles/rewards redemption with the new Air Canada coming in 2020 it might be a good idea to give a new look to Air Miles cards and benefits.

  2. An impressive share! I’ve just forwarded this onto a coworker who has been doing a little homework on this.
And he in fact bought me dinner because I stumbled
upon it for him… lol. So let me reword this…. Thank YOU
for the meal!! But yeah, thanks for spending time to discuss this matter
    here on your internet site.

  3. I’ve got my Fido MasterCard lately, took it with me for my trip to Vegas and spent there about $1000 plus I got my sign-up bonus and now the cash back balance is almost hundred dollars.
What I like about this card is you don’t need to wait till the end of the year, you can set it up that your monthly telephone bills will be paid from your cash back balance every month.

  4. For those who are not familiar with the term anime series here is a small explanation for you. Anime is a special Japanese animation art form from all genres found in movies.
