Credit Cards that give Free Hotel Stays

It is fairly slim pickings in Canada in terms of which credit cards that give us free hotel stays. Below are the only two credit cards that give us a free hotel stay.

Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa Card

Chase Marriott Rewards Visa

  • $120 annual fee (waived the first year)
  • Earn 1 Free Night Stay at a Category 1-4 location after account approval
  • Receive 1 anniversary bonus free night stay at a Category 1-5 hotel every year

American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Card

American Express Starwood Preferred Guest

  • $120 annual fee
  • Earn 1 Free Weekend Night Award (Friday, Saturday or Sunday night) at Category 1-4 Starwood hotels and resorts when you spend $40,000 per year

For the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa Card, your Free Night Stay E-Certificate will be automatically deposited into your Marriott Rewards Account after your account is opened.

The Free Night Stay E-Certificate is valid for hotels in categories 1-4, which may not be transferred, extended beyond the expiration date, or re-credited for points and have no cash value.

Secondly, receive 1 anniversary bonus free night stay at a Category 1-5 hotel every year that you retain the credit card. The Free Night Stay E-Certificate will be automatically deposited into your Marriott Rewards account 6-8 weeks from your anniversary date.

Such perks make the $120 annual fee more justifiable, so this is a highly recommended credit card in my books.
As for the American Express SPG Preferred Guest Credit Card, if you spend $40,000 during your anniversary of having the credit card, you will earn a Free Weekend Night Award that will expiry 1 year from when it is issued. The Award is good for a standard room at participating Starwood Category 1-4 properties on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night.

The SPG Award is slightly more difficult to achieve and requires a very high spending requirement. It comes out to $3333.33 per month in spending on your credit card. If you can actually reach that spending threshold, then the hotel room would definitely cover the $120 annual fee.

As you can see, it is very slim pickings in Canada. I hope to see more hotel co-branded credit cards.

    1. Hi Jack, the MBNA Best Western MasterCard is a great card, but I do not believe that they give a free hotel room. They do give a one tier elite status upgrade when you spend $6,000 on your card within one year.
