[DISCONTINUED] Capital One Aspire World Travel MasterCard

I am actually in shock that one of my favourite credit cards in Canada, the Capital One Aspire Travel World MasterCard has been discontinued. No new clients can sign up for this credit card any more.

Below were the highlights of the credit card:

  • $120 annual fee
  • Earn 35,000 sign up bonus points after your first purchase
  • Earn 10,000 anniversary bonus points
  • Earn 2 points per $1 spend on anything

This is such an unfortunate turn of events.

I gave Capital One a call to see what will happen to my credit card. They said that existing cardholders will be able to continue hanging on to their credit cards. So if you are an existing credit card holder, you will want to retain it for as long as possible while you still can.

This is such a disappointing turn of events because the competition in Canada has just gotten weaker.

For the time being I will still continue to hang on to this credit card while I still can, but I will definitely be searching for a replacement within my portfolio.

  1. Am I missing something as I’ve read about this for a few days. Isn’t it just “re-branded” as Aspire Travel World Elite Mastercard? Still 2 points per $1 spent, 10,000 yearly points, redemption and insurance the same.

  2. Please disregard my previous post. I contacted Capital One and now see that the new “World Elite” card has differences. Here is part of the summary from my online chat:

The new Aspire Travel World Elite MasterCard offers exclusive World Elite MasterCard Concierge Services, an enhanced concierge service that gives customers access to Concierge Agents in 60+ cities worldwide.

The product does not offer an annual bonus and the first purchase bonus has been reduced to 10,000 miles. Customers on Aspire Travel World Elite will still get two reward miles for every $1 they spend on purchases.

  3. Sad to see this card go. Probably the effect of new merchant fee restrictions being introduced….

  4. That is quite interesting. I will keep mine as it has served me well. My only 2 complaints were the international transaction fees(so I never used it outside of Canada) and that when redeeming for smaller rewards it always rounded up substantially to certain levels.
Perhaps they are replacing it with a new product that will improve on it.

    1. I am definitely keeping mine for as long as I still can. At this point it doesn’t seem like we’ll be getting any upgrades to the card anymore. Only downgrades.

  5. Disregard my post as well, I didn’t read it carefully. Yes, this is a huge drop in value. I’ll hang onto mine as long as possible as long as the 10000 yearly points post.

    1. I will continue to keep it as my standby card. It’s only cost is 20$ a year if you consider that you get 100$ in travel every anniversary and the fee is 120$.
