[DISCONTINUED] MBNA Smart Cash Platinum Plus MasterCard Discontinued?

Is it just me or is the MBNA Smart Cash Platinum Plus MasterCard discontinued? I can’t find an application link.

Highlights

For now, below “were?” the highlights of the credit card:

  • No annual fee
  • Earn 5% cash back (on the first 6 months) on gas and grocery purchases
  • Earn 2% cash back (after the first 6 months) on gas and grocery purchases
  • Earn 1% cash back for all other purchases

What the Customer Service Representatives Said

I gave MBNA a few calls to clarify as I have been getting conflicting reports. Some representatives say that the credit card has in fact been discontinued. The agents who take phone applications claim to be unaware of the link being taken off the website and continue to insists that they can continue to take phone applications for the credit card. One agent told me that the credit card will be back up on the site within a few hours. Another agent said it will take a week before it is back up on the website.

Thoughts

Personally, I do not use this credit card, but it is still a very popular credit card among many Canadians because of the 2% cash back on gas and groceries, and more importantly, no annual fee.

If this credit card does get cancelled fully, I would be completely shocked by this decision. TD / MBNA do not actually have any other respectable cash back credit cards. So they are either moving away from the cash back market or they have something else up their sleeves. Some reps claimed that they are working on some changes to the credit card before it is posted back. Time will tell how things plays out.

What to do

If it is true that they are still able to take phone applications and you have been contemplating whether to get this credit card or not, then I would recommend that you go for it while you still can.

If you still have this credit card and enjoy using it, you will want to ensure that you are grandfathered (which I think you will be). Either way, if you currently have this credit card, I would hold on to it for the time being, because once you cancel it, you may not get it back.

I will do my best to stay updated on any new developments. Feel free to share any updates that you may have heard in the comment section below!

  1. I take advantage of this credit card low transfer fee from other credit card. It’s been great. Or sometimes it has offers for line of credit (kind of service) for almost your entire credit allowance for 0.9% or 1.9%, that you can use

  2. MBNA has informed me that my Smart cash Mastercard is changing to Visa and it will be a Visa card now. That is the change!
