Top Credit Card for Purchasing Groceries (updated on April 7, 2014)

We previously wrote a post about Top Credit Card for Purchasing Gas. Today, we will focus on groceries.

Our grocery bill is probably one of the higher monthly bills that we pay. Luckily for us, there are several credit cards out there that offer a great return for grocery purchases. Just remember that every credit card company has a different list of which stores qualify for groceries. So be sure to know which stores are on the list.

Here is a list of the top credit cards:

Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite Card

  • $99 annual fee (waived if you apply before June 30, 2014)
  • Earn 4% cash back on gas and grocery purchases (on your first $25,000 of annual spending on these categories)
  • Earn 2% cash back on drug store purchases and recurring bill payments (on your first $25,000 of annual spending on these categories)
  • Earn 1% cash back on all purchases made above the $25,000 threhold on the categories listed above
  • Earn 1% cash back on all other purchases

Scotiabank Gold American Express Card

  • $99 annual fee (waived the first year)
  • Earn 15,000 sign up bonus points after your first purchase
  • Earn 4 points for every $1 you spent on gas, grocery, dining and entertainment
  • Earn 1 point for every $1 spent on all other expenses

American Express Gold Rewards Card

  • $150 annual fee (waived the first year)
  • Earn 25,000 points when you spend $500 in the first 3 months
  • Earn 2 points for every $1 spent on eligible travel (flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises, etc.) purchases, as well as gas, groceries and drug stores.
  • Earn 1 point for every $1 spent on all other purchases.
  • Points do not expire as long as the account remains open
  • Transfer points into frequent flyer and hotel programs, including 1:1 to Aeroplan and Avios
  • Earn 10,000 points for each approved referral

TrueEarnings Card Costco and American Express

  • No annual fee
  • Earn 3% cash back on eligible restaurant purchases (some restaurants may not be ineligible)
  • Earn 2% cash back on Costco and retail stand-alone gas stations purchases (to a maximum of $3,000 worth of gas purchases annually)
  • Earn 1% cash back on any gas purchases over $3,000
  • Earn 0.25% cash back on your first $1,000 and up to $2,000 in other purchases
  • Earn 0.5% cash back on your next $2,000 and up to $3,000 in other purchases
  • Earn 1% cash back on any amount over $3,000 of other purchases

MBNA Smart Cash Platinum Plus MasterCard

  • No annual fee
  • Earn 5% cash back (on the first 6 months) on gas and grocery purchases on $400 worth of monthly (calendar month) purchases
  • Earn 2% cash back (after the first 6 months) on gas and grocery purchases on $400 worth of monthly (calendar month) purchases
  • Earn 1% cash back for all other purchases on $1,250 worth of monthly (calendar month) purchases

RBC Cash Back MasterCard

  • No annual fee
  • No Credit History Required
  • Earn 2% cash back for every $1 spent at grocery stores
  • Earn 0.5% cash back on your first $6,000 (annually) worth of purchases that are not groceries
  • Earn 1% cash back on any purchases in excess of $6,000

Ideally you want to get a credit card that gives you at least 2% cash back or 2 points per $1 spent.
