Updated MBNA Alaska Airlines Credit Card Links

UPDATE- (June 27, 6pm PST) Thanks to Garry in comment section below, letting us know that the GreatCanadianRebates links are back!

Feels like I am writing about MBNA almost every day lately. Anyway, the glitch seems to have lasted less than 48 hours. Seems like we have a conclusion now. MBNA has decided to offer two versions of their credit cards.

Highlights

Below are the highlights of the two cards, also highlighted the major differences between the two cards.

Alaska Airlines Platinum Plus MasterCard

  • $75 annual fee
  • Earn 20,000 sign up bonus miles after spending $1,000 in the first 90 days
  • Earn 3 miles for every $1 spent on Alaska Airlines tickets, vacation packages, cargo and inflight purchases
  • Earn 1 mile for every $1 spent on all other purchases
  • Receive an annual companion fare (costing $99 USD plus taxes and fees)

Alaska Airlines World Elite MasterCard

  • $99 annual fee
  • Earn 30,000 sign up bonus miles after spending $1,000 in the first 90 days
  • Earn 3 miles for every $1 spent on Alaska Airlines tickets, vacation packages, cargo and inflight purchases
  • Earn 1 mile for every $1 spent on all other purchases
  • Receive 1 complimentary checked bag per passenger on the same qualifying reservation (up to a maximum of 6 passengers)
  • Receive an annual companion fare (costing $99 USD plus taxes and fees)
  • Income Requirement: $80,000 (personal) or $150,000 (household)

Thoughts

Basically, you are paying $24 more for the free checked bag. However, you do have to qualify for the card. Also note that the World Elite version has better travel insurance coverage.

I am also very happy to see two versions of the card. It opens up the door to more potential applicants.

Notes

  • Not surprisingly, I still cannot see either of the cards on the main MBNA website. We would still need to use these direct links.
  • As for Alaska Airlines website, they updated their application link accordingly. However, they did not include the Platinum Plus version.
  • I have yet to see GreatCanadianRebates’ updated linkes (please private message me for a referral). If you see it, feel free to share in the comment section below.

I am just glad to see this back in action!

  1. I’m still assuming this is a good deal for someone in Toronto. Sign up to get the miles and use them on American?

  2. No problem Matt! Just hoping that as I was approved Monday morning that I get the 30,000 miles not 25,000.
Thank you for your wonderful resource for us living North of the border

  3. We are paying $24 more for the free checked bag (re: WE version) and ALSO 5000 extra points (as it was 25K signup bonus) so I think it’s worth it. You need to spend $5000 in order to get that extra bonus point.

  4. I just applied for the new Alaska Airlines World Elite MC, and got a pending status.
    Is this a bad sign?

  5. Not necessarily. I never get auto approvals.. like ever.. but I’ve successfully gotten a number of cards and I more than meet the criteria for them… possibly my name is a pretty common one? who knows.

  6. As a current holder of the Alaska Airlines World Elite MC do you think I will get the Free Checked bag automatically?
Just considering whether to apply for another card for this benefit and see if I get the 30K miles

  7. The key question here is can you apply for both and get the sign-up bonus on each. If yes, that opens the door for much more lucrative churning. I sure hope the answer is yes.

  8. Matt, Is the 3 points on Alaska Air worth it given that Alaska only uses USD currency and you get hit by a 2.5% FTF? For example if you buy a ticket for 400 USD = 520 CAD –> You pay 10 USD in FTF = 13 CAD and you gain 1560 miles which is worth close to 3 CAD? I think in that case paying with my no FTF credit card makes much more sense so the 3 miles on Alaska benefit does not really apply.

  9. My bad, 1560 miles is worth close to 30 CAD by my calculations so it is still a gain but the FTF takes a good chunk of it out unfortunately 🙁
